A close-up of a petrified log. The quartz seen here was formed when dissolved silica from volcanic ash was carried into submerged trees where it replaced organic matter. Other minerals such as iron oxide were mixed in to account for the varied colors. In Arizona this took place in the Triassic period ca. 220 million years ago.
